COMPOUND NOUN

 COMPOUND NOUN

A compound noun is a noun that is formed by combining two or more words to create a new, single entity with a specific meaning. These words can be connected in different ways, and the resulting compound often has a meaning that may not be obvious from the meanings of its individual parts.

There are three main types of compound nouns:

1. Closed or Solid Compound Nouns

✓ Words are joined together without any spaces or hyphens.

     Example :- toothpaste, bedroom, football

2. Hyphenated Compound Nouns

✓  Words are joined by hyphens.

   Example :- mother-in-law, up-to-date, well-being

3. Open Compound Nouns

   ✓ Words are written separately.

Example :- ice cream, swimming pool, post office.

Compound nouns can be formed by combining nouns with other nouns, adjectives, verbs, or prepositions. Here are some examples:

  Noun + Noun

✓ Rainbow : formed from "rain" and "bow."

✓ Bookstore : formed from "book" and "store."

 Adjective + Noun

✓ Blackboard : formed from "black" and "board."

✓ Greenhouse : formed from "green" and "house."

 Verb + Noun

✓ Swimming pool : formed from "swimming" and "pool."

✓ Breakfast : formed from "break" and "fast."

Compound nouns allow for more efficient communication by encapsulating complex ideas in a single term. Understanding the different types of compound nouns can help in both reading and writing English.
